Cataracts

Cataracts is a condition that affects the crystalline lens which sits just behind your pupil. The Crystalline Lens becomes cloudy reducing the clarity of your vision. It can form at any age, but typically occurs in people over the age of 65. The condition does not happen suddenly but is rather a gradual process. There is also no clear reason why it happens although risk factors include:

  • age
  • diabetes
  • smoking
  • drinking misuse
  • UV damage
  • Family History of cataracts

Symptoms may include:

  • blurry or misty sight
  • double vision
  • changes to colours i.e faded or washed out appearance.
Glaucoma

Glaucoma, caused by increased eye pressure due to blocked drainage, can lead to vision loss if untreated. Fortunately, modern eye care has made glaucoma easily detectable and manageable. Our expert optometrists use advanced technology to identify glaucoma early during comprehensive eye exams.

We focus on proactive care, monitoring your eye pressure and optic nerve health to catch any changes promptly. If glaucoma is detected, we quickly implement a personalized treatment plan.

If glaucoma is detected by the optometrists you will need to be referred to the hospital for treatment. Although glaucoma cannot be cured, early detection can delay the rate of progression.

Dry AMD – this develops slowly and causes gradual changes to your central vision

Wet AMD – this can develop very quickly, resulting in significant changes to your central vision over weeks or even days

AMD affects people in different ways. Symptoms may develop slowly if you have dry AMD, especially if it’s only in one eye. However, as the condition progresses, your ability to see clearly will change.

  • Gaps or dark spots (like a smudge on glasses) may appear in your vision, especially first thing in the morning
  • Objects in front of you might change shape, size or colour or seem to move or disappear
    Colours can fade
  • You may find bright light glaring and uncomfortable or find it difficult to adapt when moving from dark to light environments
  • Words might disappear when you are reading
  • Straight lines such as door frames and lampposts may appear distorted or bent
Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic Retinopathy is a condition affecting the retina due to a complication of diabetes.

The retina, a delicate light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye, plays a vital role in vision. It relies on a network of tiny blood vessels for nourishment.

However, conditions like diabetes can lead to elevated blood sugar levels, potentially damaging these delicate vessels over time. This may result in bulges or even bleeding within the retinal blood vessels. If left unchecked, the resulting damage and scar tissue can progressively impair vision.

Our experienced optometrists use advanced technology to monitor your retinal health during comprehensive eye exams. We’re committed to early detection and management of retinal issues, helping preserve your vision for years to come. Trust Jeffery & Associates, across our Suffolk locations, to keep a watchful eye on your retinal health.
